Volunteering at Our Farm: We’re seeking long-term WWOOFers
We are excited to hear from enthusiastic, open-hearted and hard-working people interested in joining us for work in Boulder in exchange for education, meals and rustic accomodations. Our season runs from March until the end of November.
Please read all the information below, then send a letter to email@example.com!
You should be familiar with our town, our mission and our cookbook.
Our Hell’s Backbone Grill farm is located at 6,300′ elevation on 6.5 acres in a beautiful valley in south central Utah between Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef National Parks, off of Scenic Highway 12 and surrounded by the Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument and Dixie National Forest.
Our restaurant is a pioneer in the “Farm to Table” movement and has won many national and state awards for our cuisine. We believe the best ingredients come from fresh, organic, locally raised food. A big part of our mission, besides growing healthy beautiful food, is to educate our guests and the public.
We’re in our 9th year of production (and 16th season of the restaurant) and are a very specific market farm, with the market being our award winning restaurant. We grow exclusively to meet produce needs for our kitchen for the 9 month season that the restaurant is open, serving three meals a day, seven days a week.
WWOOF volunteers participate in all aspects of the farm, from bed preparation and seed sowing, to animal care (150 chickens, 15 goats), visitor education, grounds maintenance, greenhouse work, weeding, harvesting, and processing. Supervision is provided by a farm manager, farm staff, and restaurant management. Most of our work is done by hand, but we do some work with a tractor also.
All produce and fruit grown (in 2014 we grew over 18,000 pounds of produce and fruit!) goes to our restaurant, either for immediate use on the menu or to be “put-up” for later in our extensive preserving operation.
WWOOF volunteers camp on the grounds of the farm, with kitchen and bathroom facilities located nearby. Meals are served at the restaurant just 2 miles from the farm. Having a vehicle is critical as there is no public transportation within 150 miles of the farm. Boulder is considered to be the most remote town in the lower 48.
We are NOT a vegetarian restaurant, though we are a deeply intentional business with extremely serious food values. We get it, that the world is a dangerous place and the food system is corrupt out there. We are in an old ranching town and we buy the meat that we serve and eat from local ranchers who grass feed and finish their beef and lamb. Our daily staff meals are made from the same ingredients we lovingly grow, source and craft by hand for our customers. Vegetarians and vegans will do well with our food offerings if they can comfortably claim “Omnivore” as their label when they are in our community.
We have found that our volunteers learn the most and get the most out of this experience when they stay for at least 2 weeks. We occasionally accept WWOOF volunteers for less time, but prefer longer commitments.
We’re looking for kindhearted, self-reliant, enthusiastic, strong, gentle, well mannered, engaged souls who want to lean in, learn and contribute.
We love dogs, but ask that you leave yours at home without prior arrangements.
Please let us know your superpowers and how they might dovetail with our needs- we occasionally hire WWOOFers to stay on with us as paid employees of the restaurant, as WWOOFing is a wonderful way to learn compatibility and strength.
How to apply
There are three stages to our interview process:
- Write us a letter telling us what work you would like to do at HBG (all employees do more than one thing!), what skills you can share and the length of time you can commit. We give priority to people who are able to commit to the entire season. Let us know if you are also interested in applying to live in our beautiful eight bedroom staff house.
- Make an appointment for a phone interview with us.
- Come visit us and lend your skills for a day or two to see if it's a good fit.
Volunteers and WWOOFers should write a similar letter as job applicants. We will be happy to help you find a good camping spot or direct you to a room, if available.
Hell’s Backbone Grill also offers work internships for accredited programs.
Please Note: We are currently unable to sponsor or provide work visas.
Please send your letter to firstname.lastname@example.org.
