Jen & Blake began with the goal to meld their ideas of place-based, seasonally appropriate cuisine, right livelihood, environmental ethics and social and community responsibility into a restaurant they would operate with compassion, generosity, loving kindness and grace. Along the way, we grew a farm, a retail wing, and a book publishing business that we try to run with the same deep caring and thought.
In 2017, President Trump announced plans that threaten our very home and livelihood, plunging us into a new phase of political activism at our restaurant. If successful, the President’s proposal will shrink the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument to half its original size and open it up to extractive mining. In addition, Bears Ears National Monument is slated to be reduced, threatening Tribal sacred lands.
Our town and county are in an economic boom because of the monument. This county of just 5,000 people brings in $78 million a year in tourist-based revenue, much of it due to the monument. And that’s just the direct tourism revenue. It doesn’t include all the other ways the monument adds to the economy. We are confident in saying that our businesses would not exist without the GSENM. Help us save our immeasurable home by supporting the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, Grand Staircase Escalante Partners, and by speaking up in support of our beautiful wild places.
